I don't remember time when Jim didn't have a smile on his face or a laugh coming out of it. As long as I knew him, he was really consistent in life and was always having a good time. He will be missed by many people.

I first met Doug in midget football for Leon's. Glad we were on the same team for a couple of years. He led Leon's to a mythical state championship with his running. He was a leader, if not the face of the LSE state championship team on both offense and defense. I'll never forget his Mom running down on the field, after Southeast scored 3 touchdowns in the 2nd half to beat Beatrice 21-14, at Beatrice in the last game of his high school career. She almost knocked him over as he was exhausted. Whether it was football, basketball, golf, pitch or poker, you always got Doug's best shot.
Starting in 8th grade, for 2 years, he initiated a golf foursome after school until dark with myself, Dan Campbell and Kent Seacrest. It was always, Doug and Kent against Dan and me. The game was always one point for low score on a hole and one point for low total for the team on a hole for $1 per point That was big stakes for teenagers who had no jobs except for caddying on the weekend for $3 for 18 holes. It was challenging, but great fun as everybody poked fun at each other.
Doug always told it like it was, often with a zinger, so you knew where he stood, but sometimes he'd surprise me. We were on the golf team for 3 years and once a new golfer to the team asked Doug (with me standing there) if he'd have any trouble beating me. Doug replied, "George can't hit the ball very far", (but, nobody could hit it as far as Doug). The new teammate then said, so I'll be okay? Doug said, "I didn't say that, Howie will kill you with his irons and putting." We all laughed.
Doug was unique and he'll truly be misssed.

Even though Doug and I weren't close as social friends, I believe our friendship was one that was even stronger. As seniors Doug and I were captains on the 1970 State Champion Football team. During that time our friendship and appreciation for each other and team grew, and it was a bond that I will never forget. Doug was a great captain and leader. He led on the field by example and always was there for his teammates. I will always remember him for all this and he will be truly missed.John Carman
Doug is best remembered as a classmate, teammate, and leader. A friend with great humor, sometimes delivered with a sharp edge and wry smile, but we all expected nothing less. He was a genuine natural athlete, with a stong heart and plenty of grit. The lessons I learned from Doug have lasted a lifetime.

So many wonderful and heartfelt tributes for Doug. I always remember his smile and in the hallways and his fun spirit in all that he did in school. While never a teammate, he was an inspiration to watch competing on the football field. Not only his performance on the field, but his work ethic in practice. Wathching that whole team in practice sessions was inspiring. I am sure he was responsible for much of that unity in his own way. Prayers for Doug, Leslie and family. God Bless your family!
