This week in the Clarion, Sept 18th

September 18, the Clarion headlines forgot seniors? How can this be?   Let’s get them done and get to the good stuff as the class of 71 settles into seniority!   Above the banner, the headline “Darnell Disputes Regents Scholarship Distribution” opens the front page with a story exploring state tax dollars, geographic and merit aspects of how students  are awarded Regents Scholarship.   Then “1960 AFS Student Talks at Assembly”, “Diary of Anne Frank—Fall Play” and finally, ‘Code Promotes Better Athlete’ according to athletic director Bill Miller.   For those of you who remember having had hair, the code required it off the ears, above the collar and two fingers above the eyes.   Turning the page, inflation, government cutbacks and the free lunch program are reasons for the increase in cafeteria prices. A display ad says “For Everything in Music go to Dietze Music House”   German AFS student Angelika Bohme feels that the generation gap is more evident in Germany than here. Angelika’s host family is the (Sue) Schroders. In sports headlines, the “Football Team Loses Heilig  For Season” due to probable heat prostration and subsequent hospitalization! Yikes!   The football team looks toward the Northeast game with senior, Doug Deeter, the only returning offensive backfield player.   Senior Steve Lee says “The defense is tough this year” Jeff  Schneider—he’s talking about you!   Harrier Bill “ Bryant Pulls Team Into Contender Role” with a 9:58 to help LSE finish 3rd at the Fremont Invitational.   Senior Mark Morton (and a bunch of juniors, but who cares who they are) had a good performance, too, according to Coach Roy Churchill.  Tomorrow, LSE netmen head to the Fremont invitational to defend last years’ title win. Good luck!   Big academic news… class of 71 Merit semi-finalists are  Julie Dresselhaus, Adrienne Fisher, John Fox and Burket Graf. That puts them in the top 1% of their class. Congratulations!    Winding up summer news, Lynelle Frankforter was tapped Ideal Allstate Girl at UNL’s summer intensives for high school students. It’s senior picture time as Karen Knudtson shines in Townsend Studios display ad and Brandstetters, Brandeis’,  Ramsey,  Anderson, and Robert Plum Studios will also snap your smile for senior pictures. Get your $6 ready, The Shield goes on sale next week. If that doesn’t tap you out, it’s CONCERT TIME! Grab your Sweetheart of the Rodeo and see the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers concert at the UNL coliseum for $3.
