November 6th, 1970   Senators Narrowly Defeat Marijuana Bill;  Tension Marks Final Session of Accent Politics.  The major portion of the evening was spent on Senior Steve Haack's previously tabled marijuana bill.  Steve said, "It's your problem, it affects your friends, and maybe yourself.  He feels the marijuana problem strikes close to home in pep club, Key Club and the athletic departments.  Opposing this bill, Senior Steve Guenzel says "I think that any action on this bill is extremely premature… the real effects of marijuana cannot be told at this time".   Spirited debate over repeal of capital punishment had Senior Matt Dalton refusing to accept the idea that man can judge to take other lives.  Passing unanimously was a bill providing for birth control clinics and the sale of prophylactics through vending machines.  In other front page news, Don Darnell says he's never seen anything like it…35-40   Seniors Could Graduate Midterm.  Senior Debbie Melstrom plans to graduate early. She will pursue her desire to ride professionally in horse shows as the season trots out in April and May.  Senior Mina McFarland plans to enroll at UNL.  Also pictured on the front page are homecoming king and queen, Dave Firestone and Jaime Swanson.  Front page news ends by announcing next year's AFS finalists, but we don't care about juniors.  Accent Politics coverage continues inside the Clarion with senators rejecting a troop withdrawal bill.   Senators did legalize abortion.  Senior Edgar Cowling's bill   proposing a volunteer military was killed.  Senior Charles Slagle's Tractor Safety Act passed, providing for roll bars and safety belts.  Governor   Norbert  Tiemann and former Governor Robert Crosby addressed the event.

Fall sports draw to a close this week.  The gridiron season ends tonight with the Knights taking on Beatrice, hoping to end the season with a 7-1-1 record.   The Knights unchained the Links   by 3 points on Oct. 16th with Senior Doug Deeter scoring on a ten yard run to put the Knights out front by three.   The undefeated streak came to an end with the Oct 23rd loss to East, a 15-14 heartbreaker.  LSE netmen took third place at state, as did the CC harriers.  In girls' sports, the swim team drowned the Links but was swamped by East in the first inter-city championship meet.  In display ad news The KFOR Sportscasters Club Proudly Announces The Appointment of Senior Larry Beck As Official KFOR Sportscaster Club Correspondent For Southeast High School "70-71"

Progress on the fall play, Diary of Anne Frank, is chronicled in pictures and stories by  Connie Fralin, Cindy Hodge and Carolyn Hull   The  Dingy Set Conveys Confinement on purpose, according to set designer Steve Shelley, to set the mood.  Lighting designer Marshall Tupper said "The specific purpose lighting will play in this show is to establish the gloomy, closed feeling of the attic and yet illuminate the actors enough to be seen."  Seniors appearing in the production include Mike Shuptar, Penny Andros, Bobby Goodman, Julie Jenkins, John O'Shea and Jim Kissell   Opening night is November 19th

Clarion coverage closes this week with a bang… a DECA bang up fundraiser.  To promote spirit, according to DECA president Scott Roper,   DECA painted 3 cars blue and white and held a car bash before the East football game.  Bashes were 3 for 25 cents, no fights broke out and about $14 was raised.  A display ad says "Whatever Your Mood...Be Yourself with Clothes from The Place, Miller & Paine Downtown-Gateway".

Carolyn, what a hoot!  I just clicked on this one at random and turns out it's the one that mentions Diary of Anne Frank, one of the productions I was in along with Bobby Goodman, Mike Shuptar, Penny Andros, and John O'Shea, and the stage craft and lighting by Steve Shelley and Marshall Tupper.  Man, what a trip down memory lane it was to read that!

Thank you for posting these articles, reading them again is a real treat!
