In Memory

Mike Carlin

Michael 'Mike' James Carlin (Commander, USN, retired) passed away August 5th after a heroic battle with cancer. Born May 22, 1953 to James 'Jim' and Anna (Lee) Carlin and raised in Lincoln, Mike was a 1971 graduate of Lincoln Southeast High School. After high school, he entered the United States Navy, where he proudly served for 24 years, retiring March 2, 2001. Upon retirement, he was employed for a time with Talent Plus before he began his tenure with US Immigration and Citizenship Services, where he remained employed until his second retirement. Mike became a passionate advocate of blues music, a regular at the Zoo Bar, and volunteered for many causes that he felt deeply passionate about. His favorite volunteer work was for KZUM radio in Lincoln, where he was a programmer, and hosted the Group W Blues show for 15 years.

Mike is survived by his wife, Bobbi, his children, Chelle Cox, (Sondra Peterson), DeWitt and Trey Cox, Lincoln. Also survived by 4 grandchildren, Taylor (Zack) Silva, San Diego, Bailey Taylor, Topeka, Hanna Taylor, Lincoln and Manny Taylor, active duty deployed in USAF. He proudly taught each to burp, make 'sounds' with their armpits, and develop their own unique senses of humor. Mike is also survived by sisters, Jean (Mark) Goldfein, and Jan Carlin, all of Omaha, as well as nephew William Goldfein and Allison (Steve) Behrens, also of Omaha. He was proud to be a great Uncle to Charlotte, Penelope and Nolan. Mike is also survived by many amazing friends, some of whom he has kept friendships with since he was a mere schoolboy in Lincoln. Close friends, Deb Mullen and Kim Pasold, have provided much support with Mike and Bobbi as they have navigated their way through their health journeys of the past couple of years. Lastly, but certainly not least, he leaves behind 2 very spoiled dogs, Charlie Musselwhite and Willie Nelson.

Mike will be deeply missed by family, friends, ornery dogs, the First Christian Church community, KZUM community, and of course by any and all who have shared his love of the blues music. Memorials may be made to KZUM radio station or First Christian Church.

Arrangements through Aspen Funeral Home. Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, August 16th at 2:00 p.m. Location is First Christian Church, 430 South 16th Street, Lincoln (17th and K).

I haven't seen Mike since school, but I feel like I could have started a new conversation with him about anything.    I'm sorry I didn't know that he was in Lincoln,   It sounds as if he had a great life and a great relationship with his family.   Cancer has taken another too soon.   My prayers are with his family.

That's too bad. We lost a good guy with a dry sense of humor. He had to be outstanding in the Navy. Rest in peace.

Mike and I rediscovered each other as Navy shipmates at the LSE 30th reunion, and continued to check in on each other at each reunion thereafter.  It is rare to have someone as both classmate and shipmate.  Mike had a great sense of humor and was an easy person to know & like.  I also appreciated his musical passion and radio program hosting -- another form of community service.  Your community, family and classmates miss you Mike!

Prayers for all of his family at this difficult time. Mike was in an Independent Study class in Architecture our senior year. Was fortunate enough to get to know him more personally. His sense of humor was fun and refreshing. He had a tremendous work ethic as well. Made life pleasant and enjoyable being around him. Mike was close friends with my younger brother and my brother-in-law as well. After we moved from Lincoln, he paid a visit to our family at Christmas time to surprise and give his wishes for a great holiday. Mike was truly a remarkable man. God Bless his soul .
