Eric Matteson Matteson

Life has been good to me since graduation. The best thing I did was to marry my wife Herta (July 4, 1975), whom I met while in my junior year at UNL studying abroad in Germany. We have enjoyed traveling, birdwatching, and volunteer medical work at home and abroad, among our activities. Herta is involved in international activities, and is the outgoing chair of the International Affairs Committee of the City of Rochester. Professionally, I am a rheumatologist and epidemiologist, and was head of the Division of Rheumatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and Professor of Medicine there, and have been involved in several professional organizations, including as President of the Rheumatology Research Foundation of the American College of Rheumatology.
After retirement from the clinical practice at Mayo Clinic, I spent a year working in the Rheumatology Department at Otago University in Christchurch, New Zealand. Since then, I have continued to be involved in medical research and medical affairs, and have pursued my interests in bird and nature ecology, including as an Olmsted County Parks Commissioner. I've been honored to receive the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumni Award, the Americal College of Rheumatology Presidential Gold Medal, and an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Univsersity of Nebraska for my work.
